Fixed Appliances

An orthodontic appliance uses a controlled force which is applied to the teeth to change their position. The appliance used is chosen based on the patient’s needs as well as achieving the best results for the patient. Sometimes tenderness may develop when a new appliance is used, but it is only temporary. Placement of appliances in the mouth is done gradually as the patient gets comfortable with it.

A fixed appliance is adjusted and removed by your orthodontist. Fixed appliances usually bring about the best result in most cases.

  • Metal braces are the most common appliance used to straighten the teeth. However, clear brackets may be used on the front teeth to improve appearances.
  • Ceramic brackets are made of clear materials so they are less visible on your teeth than metal braces. Ceramic braces are typically used on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. Ceramic braces do require more care, since they are larger and are more brittle than metal braces. Ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
